2022.10.05House music pioneer Kerri Chandler discusses how Dolby Atmos helps him build listening environments that interact with and envelop his fans. Filmed In New York Kerri expresses how he wants to keep evolving as an artist, and discusses his album concept in a the brilliant short film
Growing up around music from an early age, in the film Kerri tells us about his family who were all artist in their own right, his father a DJ helped him to shape his passion and discover the club environment that inspired his journey to become of the leading artists in the world. In fact, his passion for the studio and hardware has been at the fore of his music from one of his most celebrated releases ' The Shelter' which we still play here at MUSENKI HQ every week!
The track was influenced by the opening of the club of the same name back in New York, making it possibly the first dance music track produced to ' seamlessly" integrate into the sound and the environment.
His desire to produce music inside venues, has been the driving force for Spaces & Places. A brilliant approach to producing music for a generation of clubbers who are experiencing clubbing to a backdrop of big, small and more creative intimate venues.
These elements feature in his album concept, that is to say 24 high-quality house tunes in his unique style, each recorded at a different legendary club space where Kerri has played or been a regular headline over the year. Clubs such as as The Ministry of Sound, Watergate (Berlin), Barbarellas (Pirovac, Croatia), Lux Fragil (Lisbon), Magazzini Generali (Milan) and the Rex Club (Paris).
Using his knowledge and familiarity of the spaces Chandler drew inspiration from the memories of the crowd, the room and soundsystem, spending time on the sound design to ensure that the resultant songs made the most of the space and system they were made in tribute to.
This remarkable recording process and euphoric scenes when Chandler played the completed version in the same club the next night – was filmed by the team behind Dolby Atmos, the legendary audio company’s next-generation ‘immersive sound technology’, which Chandler learned to master during the lockdowns.
What makes the idea and the concept so unique is that Dolby Atmos knows the system you are using and adapts the music to it immediately, making it a truly immersive experience. The Dolby Atmos-mixed versions available to stream provide the listener a window into Chandlers production prowess.
The album already gaining plaudits, took Kerri years to develop, and in the film here shares intimate words to the passing of his beloved uncle Aaron. The song ‘Back to Earth’, dedicated to his uncle was recorded in the Knockdown Center in NYC, the lyrics and vocals, recorded with his cousin Aaron Junior.
