One of Philly Soul's all time greats, and a defining voice, continues to remind us of the hits and prowess of this giant of black american music. Originally released on the excellent BBE label earlier this year, now, this limited edition blue vinyl collectors piece is re-issued, enabling those who missed out the first time round to own this special piece of limited edition triple vinyl.

Born in Philadelphia in 1950, Theodore DeReese Pendergrass attended and sang at church at age two, and was ordained a minister at ten years old. Learning drums and playing locally in bands during his teens, at 20 he was hired as a drummer for the Blue Notes by legendary group leader Harold Melvin. After being spotted singing along onstage, he was soon appointed lead singer, and the rest is history…

On this carefully curated collection John Morales’ revisits the unique relationship with Teddy’s and Gamble & Huff’s music as compellingly and immersively as when it was produced the first time. The resultant outcome is as inspired as you'd expect, revealing remix work of John Morales affords these classic songs improved clarity, allowing each individual player more space to be heard and modernising the recordings without ever losing sight of the original spirit.

The virtuoso quality of the songwriting, production, arrangements and performances shine forth anew, and so do some of the music’s subtler qualities and nuanced, sometimes conflicted, subtexts that might have been overlooked in the most conventional view of Pendergrass in his prime. Throughout, the troubled but immensely talented singer remains the undisputed star of the show.
