Greg Royal aka Pur Royale – An Icon of Black Music and Underground Sound.
While you may not immediately recognise the name Greg Royal, aka Pur Royale, his work has undoubtedly shaped the music you know and love. With production credits on groundbreaking albums such as Patrice Rushen’s “Feels So Real”, Royal’s influence on contemporary Black music from the mid-80s to the mid-90s is undeniable.
In 1994, however, Royal took a bold step outside of his signature hip-hop and R&B sound, releasing the rare 12” house record *Royal Phenomena*. A striking departure, it demonstrated his versatility and vision, blending hip-hop production with Latin rhythms, minimalism, and UK bleep to craft a uniquely underground sound. This rare gem reappeared on Must Have’s 2016 Teflon Dons compilation, earning it renewed acclaim.
Now, for the first time, Royal has shared his original DAT recordings, allowing us to experience "Royal Phenomena" in its full, unfiltered glory—a perfect blend of genre-breaking innovation that continues to inspire and influence today’s underground scene.
